Old Man Scanlon's

Cemetery Records & Monument Inscriptions, Pine Grove Cemetery, Milford, Worcester, Massachusetts

What's Here

Several of Old Man Scanlon's ancestors and relatives are in Pine Grove Cemetery, located on the southwest corner of Cedar St. (Rte. 85) and Dilla St. next to the old dump. Enter from Cedar St.; the Dilla St. gate has been closed to thwart traffic light short-cutters. I first viewed the stones in July, 2000.

Pine Grove was incorporated in 1841. It is now the responsibility of a Milford National Bank & Trust foundation. Mr. Robert J. Moore of Hopedale has custody of cemetery records; the transcriptions below are exact copies of the records he provided. Below are:

MASON Stones

There is a row of marble stones immediately west of the MASON obelisk, shown below from left to right. There is a substantial gap between the three children on the left and Martha MASON on the right. John J. MASON's stone is sunken and tilted; the ground partially obscures the bottom line. The stones are deteriorated enough so that some lettering is ambiguous or partially unreadable, particularly the small verses. Mrs. Martha's verse is the first six lines, slightly modified, of the circa 1759 "Epitaph on Mrs. Clerke" of Thomas Gray.

NELSON Inscriptions

Newell NELSON Stones

Observed on September 27, 2000. There's a row of five stones east of the large one; the leftmost three are flat-topped, the rightmost two are curved on top. Eliza's stone has been broken and repaired around the last line, rendering it unreadable except for what's probably her age. There is a row of four small squat stones west of the large stone, but they are so lichen-encrusted as to be unreadable, at least in the failing light I was reading by.
